Century Junior High School
Orland Park, Illinois
The design of this school reflects a separation between the classroom learning environment and the public social group areas. The volume differences between classroom and extra-curricular spaces allowed the design team to address the dynamic sloping site. The result is a three-story classroom wing tucked into the hillside, while the overall building form remains symmetrically balanced. A key characteristic behind the classroom layout was the ability to be transformed into a multi-purpose space. The design team incorporated folding partitions allowing various classroom configurations to be created as necessary. A central courtyard introduces natural light and offers teachers an opportunity to hold outdoor class within a secure environment.
